Alan Beale

Newcastle Classical: theme and variation

Wednesday, December 10, 2014
5:30 pm

Venue: Space Six, Commercial Union House

The canonical five ‘orders’ of architecture established in the 16thC on classical models can be found in their traditional forms in the city, but the streets of Newcastle also display creative use of these ‘orders’ and the enrichments with which they are embellished.

Alan Beale is currently a tutor on the Explore programme and teaches Latin at the Lit & Phil. He has been looking up at the rich classical heritage of Newcastle’s architecture for several years and is working on a guide to the five ‘orders’ in the city.

5:30pm doors for drinks and chit-chat, 6pm lecture start.
